House flies are one species of flies in the insect order Diptera, and they all have one set of wings. Also known as "annoying" flies. House flies are about an inch long and gray.

House flies are found almost everywhere people live. They lay their eggs on animal feces, litter, and rotting organic matter.

Flies infestations may not be a major concern, but they can spread disease as well. There are many safe and easy ways to prevent or eliminate an injury when it occurs.

Are flies harmful?
In many cases, a house fly infestation is often just a nuisance. However, house flies can also carry viruses and bacteria that can spread when stung. The diseases that house flies may carry include:

food poisoning
cholera
Coli
Typhoid fever
Dysentery
tuberculosis
Eye infections
Tropical infection called yaws
How to get rid of flies naturally
It is possible, and often preferred, to get rid of house flies naturally, without pesticides. Possible methods include:

Herbs and flowers
Herbs and flowers can be grown both in and out of your garden to keep flies away from your home. Herbs and flowers that can repel flies include:

basil
Marigold
lavender
Bay leaves
Catnip
As a bonus, some can be used for cooking as well.

Vinegar and dish soap
A mixture of vinegar and dish soap can help trap flies. To use this method, mix about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap in a tall cup. Cover the glass with plastic wrap. Secure the plastic wrap with an elastic band and make small holes on top.

The flies will be attracted to the vinegar in the glass and will fly through the holes. However, dish soap causes the flies to drown rather than land on the vinegar.

Cayenne pepper and water
Cayenne pepper can help repel house flies. Mix it with water and spray it around the house to prevent flies from entering.

Venus flytrap
Venus flytraps are carnivorous plants that eat insects. If you plant them outside, the flies will naturally eat them. Indoors, you may need to feed the plant flies.

When the fly enters the plant trap, it closes around the fly. Then digestive fluid is secreted to dissolve the insect's soft insides. It cracks the insect over 5 to 12 days, then spits out the exoskeleton.

You can also use foods or drinks that flies are attracted to to lure them into traps. These include:

Sugar (honey or molasses)
wine
fruit
Meat

Insecticides and other repellents
In addition to natural ways to get rid of house flies, you can use insecticides and traps to kill or remove flies.
